False Witness

Writer's picture: Suzanne LeonardSuzanne Leonard

Exodus 20:16 says"You shall not bare false witness against your neighbor".

At first, one would probably take that to mean that we should not tell lies about other people. And though this is absolutely true, I believe there is much more to it. If we are using falsehoods to manipulate others, is that not baring false witness? If we distort God's word in order to manipulate others or even for our own gain, is that not baring false witness? God is not the author of confusion, so in turn if the words create confusion and strife, cannot be of God. We we do not consider false witness against God to be a sin, then what are we doing? To sin to commit a crime against God, to know to do right, and to do wrong is Sin of itself.

If we knowingly and purposely bare false witness against anyone then we do so against God. Jesus said "that which you do for the lease of these, you do for me". The same goes for Sin.
